The Minnesota Vikings are preparing to ramp up their hunt for a full-time general manager following the 2026 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, Rob Brzezinski will continue running the show in an interim capacity, though not without the competition breathing down his neck; but should they be?

Recent intel from The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic suggests executives are gunning for Brzezinski's (temporary) job. She highlights how the allure of the Vikings' current setup makes the GM vacancy attractive to many, and on the surface, it makes sense.

The club's head coach, Kevin O'Connell, and "state-of-the-art facilities and support staff" are strong selling points, but all that glitters is not gold in Minnesota.

Rodrigue states that "candidates around the league have an eye on" the Vikings' GM gig. However, it's important to weigh the cons of the opportunity too. After all, there probably wouldn't be a search for a new decision-maker if there were no fundamental issues in Minnesota.

Minnesota Vikings GM job may not be as good as advertised

Let's start by acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding O'Connell and the Vikings last offseason. While the two sides ultimately resolved the matter and agreed to a multi-year contract extension, there was reportedly "tension in the relationship." Their friction, albeit resolved, can't be overlooked.

While O'Connell emphatically shut down any speculation regarding a potential Minnesota exit before they even settled on a new deal, things can change quickly. What happens if the team misses the playoffs for a second consecutive campaign? His patience might run out, and vice versa.

Speaking of leaders who could eventually be on the move, Vikings standout defensive coordinator Brian Flores has made it known he wants another head-coaching opportunity. Despite garnering interest this hiring cycle, Minnesota convinced him to stay with a new deal. Another strong season may make it difficult to retain his services (again).

What about the Vikings' quarterback situation? They're seemingly committed to 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy's development, but the significant investment in him has aged quite poorly thus far, to put it mildly. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray has a chance to become their long-term solution on a one-year "prove it" deal, though there are valid concerns with his arrival.

In addition to questions surrounding football's most important position, the Vikings have an aging roster with holes on both sides of the ball. They're weak at safety, center, and defensive line, among other areas. Whoever steps in as the GM will have to do a better job of finding the balance between adding youth and talent.
