Justin Jefferson quietly broke another NFL record and isn’t even done yet

For the first five-plus seasons of his career, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson has been no stranger to making NFL history. And during the Vikings' 16-13 win over the New York Giants on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the four-time Pro Bowler made some more.

Coming into the Week 16 matchup with Big Blue, Jefferson had tallied 561 career regular-season receptions, putting him just three shy of the NFL record for the most catches by a player in their first six seasons.

This record was owned by Jarvis Landry, who recorded 564 in his first six years, the first 400 with the Miami Dolphins from 2014 to 2017 and another 164 with the Cleveland Browns between the 2018 and 2019 campaigns.

On Sunday, Jefferson tied Landry's record with a 16-yard grab roughly three and a half minutes into the second quarter, and set the new mark less than three minutes later, catching a 14-yard pass from J.J. McCarthy on 3rd and 15 to set up a successful fourth-down conversion from Aaron Jones on the following play.

Jefferson ultimately ended his afternoon with six catches, which, sadly, was the exact number he had in the Vikings' previous three outings combined. What's interesting about this latest record is that he may end up not actually holding it at season's end.

With his six catches, Jefferson now has 567 for his career. But he actually wasn't the only one to pass Landry on Sunday, as his fellow 2020 draftee, CeeDee Lamb, upped his career total to 565 with six catches of his own in the Dallas Cowboys' defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. So, it'll be interesting to see how the next two weeks play out regarding that record.

But setting this new receptions record isn't the only history Jefferson can make this week, as he's also now in prime position to set the new mark for the most receiving yards by a player in their first six seasons on Christmas Day when the Vikings host the Detroit Lions.

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson now needs just 27 yards to set another new NFL record

With his six catches going for 85 yards in the win over the Giants, Jefferson now has 8,349 regular-season receiving yards for his career, putting him just 27 yards away from taking sole possession of the mark for the most through six seasons, which currently belongs to none other than Randy Moss, who went for 8,375 yards in his first six years with the Vikings from 1998 to 2003.

Jefferson, of course, already owns the records for the most receiving yards through two seasons (3,016), three seasons (4,825), four seasons (5,899), and five seasons (7,432).

Now with 917 yards on the season, the four-time All-Pro is also just 83 yards away from becoming just the third player in NFL history to hit the 1,000-yard mark in each of his first six seasons, the other two being Moss and Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Moss saw his streak come to an end in season seven, and Evans, who began his career with a record 11 consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns, is set to see his come to an end this year, as injuries have limited him to just six games.
