While everyone is focused on the offseason QB1 battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, the Minnesota Vikings might already be thinking about life after each quarterback if a recent rumor is true.
During an episode of "The Coach JB Show" on Monday, former Independence Community College head coach Jason Brown (of Netflix's "Last Chance U" fame) shared that former Vikings quarterback Sean Salisbury was recently in Minnesota and found out that his old team is "very interested" in adding former Texas Tech signal-caller Brendan Sorsby.
"From what I've heard, Sean Salisbury was just down there; he played there. Him and Jim McMahon were there for years. They were talking, [and] Minnesota is very interested.
That tells me that [the Vikings are] not high on either A, keeping Kyler for multiple years, or B, J.J.'s growth, right? So, you grab [Sorsby] in the supplemental. [That] makes sense.”
This information was, of course, shared before the NFL announced on Tuesday that they won't be holding a Supplemental Draft this year, meaning Sorsby likely would not be able to enter the league until the 2027 offseason at the earliest.
Rumored interest in Brendan Sorsby suggests Minnesota Vikings don't think they have a long-term QB on the roster
If what Brown shared from Salisbury on Monday is true, then it seems very possible that the Vikings' starting quarterback for the 2027 season might not even be on their current roster.
Murray has only been with Minnesota for a few months, but is the team already having second thoughts about him being a long-term option under center, especially since the team knows they will have to pay him a bunch of money to stick around past the 2026 season?
McCarthy is in the middle of his third offseason with the Vikings, and if he doesn't pull off a Minneapolis Miracle to win the team's quarterback competition this summer, could Minnesota look to trade him to another team before the start of the regular season?
There are many, many more questions that should be asked about the Vikings' future plans at quarterback if the rumor from Brown is, in fact, true.
The biggest one of all might seem obvious, but it has to do with wondering why Minnesota would be interested in a quarterback prospect who had his college eligibility for the 2026 season taken away by the NCAA after an investigation revealed that he placed thousands of bets during the last four years on professional and college sports, including some on his own teams.
Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell loves to brag about the culture that he has built inside the team's locker room during his tenure with the franchise. But what kind of message would O'Connell be sending to his players if he brought in someone who could potentially make a mistake in a game on purpose in order to win a bet?
The Vikings have already had plenty of extra eyeballs on them during the last few months due to the battle between Murray and McCarthy. But if Sorsby wound up getting added to the mix, Minnesota would have transformed into a full-blown circus.
Thankfully, the NFL's decision on Tuesday will prevent any elephants, tigers, or clowns from being in attendance at Vikings training camp later this summer.
